The Laserlab-Europe AISBL Expert Group on Laser Science for Cultural Heritage has released its new position paper, outlining the strategic role of advanced laser technologies in the study, conservation, and preservation of cultural heritage.

The document reflects the collective expertise of leading scientists from across the Laserlab-Europe network, who are working to advance non-invasive, high-precision methods for analysing artworks and historical artefacts. These approaches, ranging from structural diagnostics to material characterisation and laser-based cleaning, are increasingly vital for safeguarding fragile heritage objects while minimising risk.

Building on the group’s mission to foster interdisciplinary collaboration, the position paper highlights the need for continued innovation, coordinated research efforts, and access to cutting-edge laser infrastructures. It also emphasises the importance of bridging science and practice, supporting conservators, museum professionals, and researchers with reliable, state-of-the-art tools and methodologies.

The Expert Group brings together a diverse group of members from leading research institutions and facilities across Europe, combining expertise in laser physics, conservation science, materials analysis, and heritage studies. This multidisciplinary composition ensures a holistic approach to cultural heritage challenges, fostering knowledge exchange and enabling the development of innovative, application-driven solutions.
