It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Freek Ariese, Associate Professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Deputy Director of LaserLaB Amsterdam, and a key figure in Laserlab-Europe. Freek passed away unexpectedly in early January 2026. He will be deeply missed.

Freek dedicated his career to molecular spectroscopy and imaging, contributing nearly 200 peer-reviewed publications and advancing innovative Raman and fluorescence techniques with applications ranging from biomedical imaging to environmental and space research. Alongside his research, he was an exceptionally committed teacher and mentor, guiding students at all levels with warmth, patience, and genuine care.

Freek was a committed and highly valued member of the Laserlab-Europe AISBL, serving in several roles over the years, including as a member of the Management Board and Chair of the General Assembly. He was deeply engaged in the association’s mission, consistently raising thoughtful questions, offering constructive comments, and suggestions that challenged and inspired the community to move Laserlab-Europe forward. He supported users of LaserLaB Amsterdam in the access projects Laserlab-Europe, Lasers4EU and ReMade@ARI, as well as co-founded the new Expert Group on cultural heritage of the Laserlab-Europe AISBL.

Beyond his scientific achievements, Freek was a highly collegial and compassionate person who connected people through his kindness and quiet humor. His passing leaves a profound void in our community.
