Research Staff in the field of quantum computing and simulation with single atoms and molecules, Leibniz University Hannover, Germany (Deadline:01.03.2026)

Nestled in a modern city surrounded by nature and with an exceptional standard of living, Leibniz University Hannover offers excellent working conditions in a vibrant scientific community.

The Institute of Quantum Optics welcomes applications for the following position starting at the earliest possible date: Research Staff in the field of quantum computing and simulation with single atoms and molecules (salary scale 13 TV-L, 100 %)

The fixed-term position is for a duration of 3 years, with the possibility of extension. The start date is in 2026 and is negotiable.

Your role

The project ‘Hybrid systems for Quantum Computing and Simulation (HybriQCS)’, funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), focuses on the development of a hybrid technology for quantum computing and simulation based on individual atoms and molecules in tweezers traps. The hybrid approach allows the atoms and molecules to be utilised on the basis of their unique properties, thus exploiting the resulting synergies.

Technical and experimental work on setting up this new quantum platform awaits you. You will be integrated into a dynamic team and will be able to contribute your own creative ideas.

Your responsibilities:

  • Design, development and construction of experimental apparatus with UHV environment
  • Performing simulations for laser cooling methods for atoms and molecules
  • Realising simultaneous laser slowing and cooling of atoms and molecules
  • Realising hybrid optical traps with atoms and molecules (dipole traps, tweezers)
  • Performing and evaluating hybrid quantum computing protocols
