Postdoctoral Researcher Position and Ph.D. Studentship in Time-Resolved Photoemission Electron Microscopy of the 2D Material-Water Interface at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore
A postdoctoral researcher position and a Ph.D. studentship are available in the group of Prof.
Zhi-Heng Loh at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. The postdoctoral
position is available from August 2026, while the Ph.D. studentship will commence in August
2027.
The project aims to employ time-resolved photoemission electron microscopy (TR-PEEM) to
investigate the electronic structure and ultrafast electron injection dynamics at the 2D
material-water interface. Supported by a three-year grant from the Ministry of Education,
Singapore, the existing TR-PEEM apparatus at NTU will be upgraded to enable energy- and
momentum-resolved TR-PEEM measurements using a femtosecond vacuum-ultraviolet
(VUV) light source operating at MHz repetition rates.
The postdoctoral researcher and the Ph.D. student will work closely on designing and
assembling the upgraded experimental apparatus; generating and characterizing ultrashort
laser pulses spanning the UV to near-IR (pump) and VUV (probe) regions; applying these
pulses to time-resolved photoemission electron microscopy and momentum microscopy
experiments; developing computer programs for automated data acquisition and data
analysis; and collaborating with research partners in the United States and the United
Kingdom on theoretical simulations and sample fabrication.
Applicants for the postdoctoral researcher position should possess a Ph.D. degree and a
strong track record in experimental physical chemistry, chemical physics, condensed matter
physics, or related disciplines. Candidates should be highly motivated and have strong oral
and written communication skills in English. Experience in the design and construction of
experimental apparatus, ultrafast optics, vacuum technology, and computer programming for
automated data acquisition and analysis will be advantageous. The initial appointment is for
one year and is renewable annually for up to three years, subject to satisfactory performance
and mutual agreement.
Applicants for the Ph.D. studentship should have a B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in physics,
chemistry, or a related field. Candidates should be highly motivated, possess a strong
academic record, and have good oral and written communication skills in English. Previous
research experience involving laser systems, vacuum instrumentation, and computer
programming would be beneficial. The Ph.D. scholarship is tenable for four years, beginning
in August 2027, and includes full tuition support and a monthly stipend.
