Postdoctoral position in quantum sensing at Northeastern University, Boston, USA

A postdoctoral position is available in my group in the Department of Physics at Northeastern University (Boston, USA) to develop and apply quantum sensors to problems in molecular biophysics. This project is supported by the National Institutes of Health. The position is available immediately, with a flexible start date.

About the research

Our group develops quantum sensing techniques – based on nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond and similar systems – and applies them to outstanding questions in biophysics, with the goal of developing molecular-level insight into protein and membrane dynamics. Candidate profile

  • PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Biophysics, or a related discipline.
  • We welcome candidates with an experimental background in either quantum sensing or molecular biophysics; experience spanning both is a plus but not required
  • Experience with scientific programming and data analysis.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Research directions
Two research directions are supported by the project. Depending on fit, the successful candidate may contribute to one or more of the following:
  1. Developing methods to characterize metal centers in proteins using quantum sensors and applying this to study electron transfer and catalytic behavior in metalloproteins. 
  2. Probing lipid membrane dynamics at length scales below the optical diffraction limit using nanoscale magnetic resonance, to investigate the scale-dependent phenomena in biomembranes.
