From 21-22 October 2024, the kick-off meeting of the EU co-funded project Lasers4EU took place in Heraklion. Set on the beautiful island of Crete, the two-day event marked the launch of the initiative, bringing together all project partners from across Europe to outline the ambitious goals set for the next four years.

The launch of the EU co-funded project Lasers4EU on October 1, 2024, marks a new era in laser research. By bringing together 29 leading laser research institutions across Europe, the project offers a central platform with unprecedented access to cutting-edge laser technologies and services for external scientists from academia and industry. Beyond transnational access, the successor of the Laserlab-Europe project provides comprehensive training opportunities, equipping users with both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise in laser technologies and applications. The project will receive 5 million euros from the European Union.

On 20 December, scientists from the Laserlab-Europe partners Max Born Institute for Nonlinear Optics and Short-Pulse Spectroscopy (MBI, Berlin) and Helmholtz Institute Jena (HIJ) met together with colleagues from the Centre for Advanced Laser Applications (CALA, Munich) in Berlin to foster the collaboration of laser institutes within the TANGO community. The agenda included hardware infrastructure, integration of existing software components, and control-system design.

From 28-29 November, the Laserlab-Europe Annual Meeting 2023 was held in Croatia. Hosted by CALT at the Institute of Physics, 35 participants came together in the beautiful city of Zagreb, to report on the recent activities and engage in fruitful discussions and exchange. 10 more partners joined the hybrid event online.

Good news for continued services to the Laserlab-Europe user community: The project proposal of Lasers4EU has been approved by the European Union. The successor of the Laserlab-Europe project will start 1 October 2024, ensuring that users can apply for transnational access projects on a large variety of scientific topics during the next five years.
