SUMMARY:Laserlab-Europe Talk: Electromagnetic pulse generation by sub-nanosecond kilojoule laser pulses
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Jakub Cikhardt (Czech Technical University) \n \n \n \n \n \n The interaction of a focused high-power laser with matter results in the generation of an electromagnetic pulse (EMP). In the case of terawatt and petawatt lasers\, the intensity of the EMP is strong enough to interfere with diagnostic signals and may cause malfunction or distortion of electronic devices. Moreover\, the laser-driven EMP could cause problems in experimental basic research\, inertial nuclear fusion\, laser-plasma biomedicine and other high-power laser technologies. On the other hand\, the mechanisms of this phenomenon are not fully understood\, making it an interesting topic for the fundamental physics of laser-matter interaction. Therefore\, the laser-driven EMP is intensively studied at the PALS laser facility – a joint research infrastructure of the Institute of Plasma Physics and the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences in cooperation with other world-leading institutions such as the Univ. of Bordeaux\, CLF Rutherford Appleton Laboratory\, CLPU Salamanca\, ENEA C.R. Frascati\, and others. \nIn recent years we have achieved some interesting results\, such as \n\nthe observation of unprecedentedly broad EMP bandwidths;\nthe dependence of the EMP spectrum shape and upper cut-off frequency on the laser beam energy/power\, target material and target ground impedance;\nthe relation between EMP emission and the escaped electron energy spectrum;\nthe influence of the wave plate on the emission of charged particles and EMP; and\nthe characterization of the EMP caused by laser interaction with various gas targets.\n\nAs part of this research\, a number of EMP diagnostics have been developed\, such as inductive target current probes\, high-voltage target probes and B-dot arrays\, and electro-optical probes have been tested. We believe that this research will contribute to EMP mitigation\, will enrich fundamental physics knowledge\, and will also lead to numerous high-tech applications\, such as electromagnetic compatibility hardening\, biology and defense. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Watch the LLE Talk

SUMMARY:DCP Frontiers in Chemical Physics Talks - "Two Becomes Four: Towards Spin Surface Crossings For Charge Transfer Dynamics That Obey Momentum Conservation” and “Exploring the Roles of Nuclear Spins\, Quantum Coherence\, and Entanglement in Ultracold Chemistry”
DESCRIPTION:Dear Colleagues\,\nWe are excited to announce the next event in the online DCP Frontiers in Chemical Physics Seminar Series\, taking place on Friday\, October 10 from 12-1pm EST.\nWe began the series with two excellent inaugural talks by Camille Bilodeau (University of Virginia) and George Schatz (Northwestern University). For those who could not attend\, the recording with both talks is available here:\nhttps://engage.aps.org/dcp/resources/webinars/past-webinars \n\nUpcoming October 10 Talks\n•	Dr. Tian Qiu (Princeton University)\n“Two Becomes Four: Towards Spin Surface Crossings For Charge Transfer Dynamics That Obey Momentum Conservation”\nAbstract: Charge transfer dynamics typically involve surface crossings between two diabatic states\, where spin states are often treated as degenerate. We have developed a phase space approach that\, by enforcing total momentum conservation\, naturally breaks spin degeneracy in a manner that depends on nuclear motion\, splitting the crossing of two surfaces into four surfaces. Equipped with a constrained complete active space (CAS) method to efficiently generate charge transfer surfaces\, our framework aims to reveal how nuclear motion couples to electron angular momentum and influences spin dynamics through spin-orbit coupling. This work seeks to provide a new perspective for understanding charge transfer processes and detailed spin dynamics\, with potential implications for phenomena such as chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS).\n•	Prof. Kang-Kuen Ni (Harvard University)\n“Exploring the Roles of Nuclear Spins\, Quantum Coherence\, and Entanglement in Ultracold Chemistry”\nAbstract: Nuclear spins are usually not thought to participate in chemical reactions. However\, in the ultracold temperature regime\, we have a new opportunity to examine this general statement with quantum mechanical details. In this talk\, I will present our ongoing investigations into the roles of nuclear spins\, quantum coherence\, and entanglement in molecule-molecule reactions\, utilizing a one-of-a-kind ultracold KRb molecule apparatus [1]. There will be surprises and puzzles. If there is time\, I will also report entangling individual trapped NaCs molecules in optical tweezers and realizing a quantum logic gate with trapped molecules [2].\n[1] Quantum interference in atom-exchange reactions\, Science 384\, 1117 (2024)\n[2] Entanglement and iSWAP gate between molecular qubits\, Nature 637\, 821 (2025)\nRegister here for the October 10 talks:\nhttps://apsphysics.zoom.us/meeting/register/KaO1WFjGS8GPcvwchPs_mw \n\nFuture Talks in the Series\n•	November 14: Bryan Changala (CU–Boulder) & Spiridoula Matsika (Temple University). SUMMARY:Atto fridays seminar Simulating Photo-Excited Processes using Grids and Gaussian Wavepackets
DESCRIPTION:Atto fridays seminar series – Friday 07/11\, 3pm UK time\, online \nThis is to let you know that there is an Atto Fridays seminar this Friday\, 07/11/2025\, at 3pm UK time\, online. Our speaker is Professor Graham Worth (UCL) and he will talk about Simulating Photo-Excited Processes using Grids and Gaussian Wavepackets\n\nRegistration is free at\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_NZHnO6i7Sb2IJYLA6z9V9g\n\nAlternatively you can watch the live-streaming on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/@QuantumBattles\n(The live chat is open for subscribers)\n\nBelow you will find an abstract and a brief bio of the speaker.\n----\nTitle: Simulating Photo-Excited Processes using Grids and Gaussian Wavepackets\n\nAbstract:\nSimulating the time-evolution of molecular systems after photo-excitation is\ncomplicated by the need to include a manifold of excited electronic states.\nThese states are coupled by so-called non-adiabatic coupling due to\nthe interaction of the electronic and nuclear motion which\nmakes the system highly quantum mechanical. As a result it is necessary to solve\nthe time-dependent Schroedinger Equation (TDSE) for reliable results.\nTo solve the TDSE\, however\, is a hard computational problem due to the\nexponential scaling of required resources with system size. The\nmulti-configuration time-dependent Hartree (MCTDH) method provides a suitable\nalgorithm that efficiently contracts the wavefunction to make it manageable\nfor many degrees of freedom [1]. Such simulations can provide a full description\nof the evolving system\, and it is possible to include the excitation by light\npulses to obtain a spectroscopic signal that can be directly compared to\nexperiments\, such as REMPI spectra [2]. It is also possible to study the\ncoherences induced in a system by a set of pulses [3]. These simulations\,\nhowever\, are constrained by the need for an analytic Hamiltonian\, which is\nusually unable to describe long-range motions. For this\, methods such as\nthe direct dynamics variational multi-configuration Gaussian (DD-vMCG)\nmethod are required that calculate the potential surfaces on-the-fly and so\nallow a flexible description of the longe-time molecular response[4].\n\n[1] Beck et al Phys. Rep. (00) 324: 1\n[2] Dey et al PCCP (24) 26: 3451\n[3] Dey et al PRL (22) 129: 173203\n[4] Spinlove et al Farad. Discuss. (18) 212: 191\n\nShort Bio:\n\nGraham Worth is a Professor of Computational Chemistry at University College London.\nHe did his PhD at Oxford University developing Free Energy Perturbation simulations\nfor condensed phase thermodynamics. He then did postdoctoral work at the EMBL and\nHeidelberg University\, where he started working on the MCTDH method for the quantum\ndynamics simulations of polyatomic molecules. He is now a lead developer of the\nQuantics suite for quantum dynamics\, which includes a range of algoritjms to solve\nthe time-dependent Schroedinger Equation\, including MCTDH and Gaussian wavepacket\nmethods. His main interests are simulating non-adiabatic dynamics and photo-excited\nprocesses. Present development work focuses on generating potential surfaces on-the-fly\nusing direct dynamics.\n\nAll welcome!\n\nCarla Faria (on behalf of the Atto Fridays team)

SUMMARY:HZDR Data Management Days 2025 – Shaping Research Data Practices with Lasers4EU
DESCRIPTION:This year’s HZDR Data Management Days will take place from Tuesday\, 11 November (1 p.m.) to Wednesday\, 12 November (3 p.m.)\, featuring a mix of lectures and interactive workshops. The programme on 12 November is only for internal participants. \nIn the context of advancing digitalisation and an ever-increasing need for reproducibility\,  this year’s event will focus on the data and software management landscape in general and at HZDR in particular. \nHZDR colleagues will share insights into typical challenges in data and software management and present practical solutions developed in their daily work. \nOn 11 November\, the lectures will be held in a hybrid format and are open to external participants. Lasers4EU partners are warmly invited to join the online sessions. \nA session of particular relevance for the Lasers4EU community will address data management planning using RDMO (Research Data Management Organiser). As funding agencies increasingly require Data Management Plans (DMPs) defining how data and metadata are handled during and after projects\, the HZDR instance of RDMO\, accessible via Helmholtz ID\, supports collaborative preparation of DMPs\, even with external partners. \nWithin this context\, the Lasers4EU project serves as a potential use case for tailoring generic DMP questionnaires to specific needs\, distinguishing between questions for proposing scientists\, access-providing facilities\, and repository providers. The session will therefore be of direct interest to Lasers4EU partners involved in data management\, access coordination\, and research infrastructure development. \nFor more information and the full programme\, please visit HZDR Data Management Days 2025
