SUMMARY:Atto fridays seminar Simulating Photo-Excited Processes using Grids and Gaussian Wavepackets
DESCRIPTION:Atto fridays seminar series – Friday 07/11\, 3pm UK time\, online \nThis is to let you know that there is an Atto Fridays seminar this Friday\, 07/11/2025\, at 3pm UK time\, online. Our speaker is Professor Graham Worth (UCL) and he will talk about Simulating Photo-Excited Processes using Grids and Gaussian Wavepackets\n\nRegistration is free at\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_NZHnO6i7Sb2IJYLA6z9V9g\n\nAlternatively you can watch the live-streaming on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/@QuantumBattles\n(The live chat is open for subscribers)\n\nBelow you will find an abstract and a brief bio of the speaker.\n----\nTitle: Simulating Photo-Excited Processes using Grids and Gaussian Wavepackets\n\nAbstract:\nSimulating the time-evolution of molecular systems after photo-excitation is\ncomplicated by the need to include a manifold of excited electronic states.\nThese states are coupled by so-called non-adiabatic coupling due to\nthe interaction of the electronic and nuclear motion which\nmakes the system highly quantum mechanical. As a result it is necessary to solve\nthe time-dependent Schroedinger Equation (TDSE) for reliable results.\nTo solve the TDSE\, however\, is a hard computational problem due to the\nexponential scaling of required resources with system size. The\nmulti-configuration time-dependent Hartree (MCTDH) method provides a suitable\nalgorithm that efficiently contracts the wavefunction to make it manageable\nfor many degrees of freedom [1]. Such simulations can provide a full description\nof the evolving system\, and it is possible to include the excitation by light\npulses to obtain a spectroscopic signal that can be directly compared to\nexperiments\, such as REMPI spectra [2]. It is also possible to study the\ncoherences induced in a system by a set of pulses [3]. These simulations\,\nhowever\, are constrained by the need for an analytic Hamiltonian\, which is\nusually unable to describe long-range motions. For this\, methods such as\nthe direct dynamics variational multi-configuration Gaussian (DD-vMCG)\nmethod are required that calculate the potential surfaces on-the-fly and so\nallow a flexible description of the longe-time molecular response[4].\n\n[1] Beck et al Phys. Rep. (00) 324: 1\n[2] Dey et al PCCP (24) 26: 3451\n[3] Dey et al PRL (22) 129: 173203\n[4] Spinlove et al Farad. Discuss. (18) 212: 191\n\nShort Bio:\n\nGraham Worth is a Professor of Computational Chemistry at University College London.\nHe did his PhD at Oxford University developing Free Energy Perturbation simulations\nfor condensed phase thermodynamics. He then did postdoctoral work at the EMBL and\nHeidelberg University\, where he started working on the MCTDH method for the quantum\ndynamics simulations of polyatomic molecules. He is now a lead developer of the\nQuantics suite for quantum dynamics\, which includes a range of algoritjms to solve\nthe time-dependent Schroedinger Equation\, including MCTDH and Gaussian wavepacket\nmethods. His main interests are simulating non-adiabatic dynamics and photo-excited\nprocesses. Present development work focuses on generating potential surfaces on-the-fly\nusing direct dynamics.\n\nAll welcome!\n\nCarla Faria (on behalf of the Atto Fridays team)

SUMMARY:Meeting of the Laserlab-Europe expert group on laser-generated EMP
DESCRIPTION:The Laserlab-Europe Expert Group on laser-generated electromagnetic pulses (EMPs) will be holding their regular workshop at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory this year. It will be a two day event\, featuring oral and poster presentations and ending with a round table discussion. \nIn experiments involving high power lasers\, a significant portion of the incoming laser energy is converted into transient electromagnetic pulses (EMPs)\, composed of radiation at radio\, microwave and THz frequencies. These EMP fields scale with laser energy and intensity and can easily exceed the MV/m magnitude – strong enough to disrupt or imperil electronic devices placed near the experimental vacuum chamber. \nThe physics of EMP production is closely related to many topics of active research within the laser-plasma community. At previous meetings of the Laserlab expert group we have had talks on a range of fascinating subjects\, including: the physics of target charging and fast currents\, generating strong magnetic fields with lasers\, ion acceleration and beam transport\, radiobiological studies\, terahertz radiation from solid targets\, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and techniques for reducing EMP emission. \nThe workshop will take place on 27 and 28 November 2025 in the Visitor Centre of the Rutherford Appleton laboratory. \nThe link to register for the conference is here: https://forms.office.com/e/BPpJ6Xs7Pr \nRegistration deadline: Friday\, 26 September 2025 \nIf you would prefer to submit your abstract after you have registered\, then send the abstract to philip.bradford@stfc.ac.uk before close of day on Friday 3rd October. Please indicate in your email whether you would like to be considered for an oral or poster presentation. \nThose attending in person will have to arrange their own accommodation. Travel from Abingdon to the conference venue will be arranged by the organisers. More details about suggested hotels can be found on the registration form. \n \n Register here

SUMMARY:X-lites Incubator Workshop: Structured Light at High Intensity
DESCRIPTION:Why this workshop matters\nOver the past decade\, structured light has rapidly expanded—especially in the high-intensity regime\, where it opens new frontiers in physics\, technology\, and interdisciplinary collaboration. This workshop will convene researchers from universities\, national laboratories\, and light-source facilities to: \n\nFoster community at the intersection of structured light\, ultrafast optics\, and high-intensity physics;\nCatalyze collaboration and align research goals across small\, mid-scale\, and large-scale facilities;\nLaunch joint initiatives and a shared roadmap for advancing structured-light science.\n\nScope and topics\nStructured light refers to optical fields whose amplitude\, phase\, polarization\, or temporal profile are deliberately sculpted\, often on the scale of a single optical cycle\, to introduce four-dimensional spatiotemporal structure. By coupling light’s spatial and temporal degrees of freedom\, structured light offers unprecedented control over light-matter interactions. \nWhile traditional laser science has emphasized smooth\, Gaussian beams\, structured-light methods intentionally introduce spatial and temporal complexity\, encoding angular momentum\, spatial chirality\, and ultrafast modulation\, to uncover new regimes of optical control. \nHigh intensity denotes fields strong enough to ionize matter\, generate plasma\, and trigger nonlinear or relativistic effects\, unlocking new physics and enabling novel applications in ultrafast and strong-field science. \n  \nRegistration closes Jan 7\, 2026 \n  \nMore information

SUMMARY:2026 Gordon Research Conference on Structures\, Energetics and Reaction Dynamics of Gaseous Ions: Characterizing Small and Large Ions Using Experiment and Theory
DESCRIPTION:Conference Description\nThe Structures\, Energetics and Reaction Dynamics of Gaseous Ions GRC is a premier\, international scientific conference focused on advancing the frontiers of science through the presentation of cutting-edge and unpublished research\, prioritizing time for discussion after each talk and fostering informal interactions among scientists of all career stages. The conference program includes an array of speakers and discussion leaders from institutions and organizations worldwide\, concentrating on the latest developments in the field. The conference is five days long and held in a remote location to increase the sense of camaraderie and create scientific communities\, with lasting collaborations and friendships. In addition to premier talks\, the conference has designated time for poster sessions from individuals of all career stages\, and afternoon free time and communal meals allow for informal networking opportunities with leaders in the field. \nGaseous ions play a pivotal role in various environments\, serving as crucial intermediates in processes ranging from atmospheric chemistry to astrophysical phenomena to industrial processing and forensics. In planetary atmospheres\, ions contribute to chemical reactions that influence weather patterns\, auroras\, and even the formation of atmospheric layers. In the interstellar medium\, they are central to the formation of complex molecules and the ionization of interstellar gases\, thereby affecting star formation and the evolution of galaxies. In combustion\, gaseous ions participate in the complex chemistry of flames\, impacting energy release and pollutant formation. Beyond these natural contexts\, gaseous ions are vital in mass spectrometry\, a key enabling technology that underpins numerous scientific fields. Mass spectrometry allows for the precise analysis of substances by ionizing molecules and measuring their mass-to-charge ratios. This technique is indispensable in proteomics for identifying proteins\, in metabolomics for studying biochemical pathways\, in environmental science for detecting pollutants\, and in the emerging field of personalized medicine. In forensics\, mass spectrometry is used for drug detection and crime scene analysis\, while in pharmaceuticals\, it is employed for drug development and quality control. The ability to generate and analyze gaseous ions has revolutionized these areas\, providing insights that are critical for research\, industry\, and beyond. \nThis GRC focuses on the fundamentals of gas-phase ion chemistry and applications in which gas-phase ion chemistry and physics play a pivotal role. The meeting emphasizes the development of new and the use of more mature experimental and theoretical approaches for studying the structures\, energetics\, and reactivity of gaseous ions and their applications to systems ranging from atomic ions to complex macro- and bio-molecular assemblies. The conference highlights experimental techniques\, including mass spectrometry\, optical spectroscopy\, and ion mobility that enable elucidation of the intrinsic properties of both simple and complex systems. The conference includes the development of new theoretical techniques as well as the use of well-developed computational approaches in support of experimental measurements. Topics included are structural characterization of gaseous ions; fundamentals of ionization\, activation\, and dissociation; ion-molecule\, ion-ion\, ion-electron\, and ion-surface interactions; ion reactivity in various environments; and a multitude of applications involving ions. \nApplication Information\nApplications for this meeting must be submitted by January 25\, 2026. Please apply early\, as some meetings become oversubscribed (full) before this deadline. If the meeting is oversubscribed\, it will be stated here. Note: Applications for oversubscribed meetings will only be considered by the conference chair if more seats become available due to cancellations.
