Postdoctoral position Matrix Isolation Studies of Aromatic Derivatives of Atmospheric Interest, Pau University, France

A one-year postdoctoral position, potentially renewable for a second year, is available at the University of Pau and Pays de l’Adour (France) within the Institute of Analytical Sciences and Physico-Chemistry for Environment and Materials (IPREM-UMR 5254). The salary will be approximately €2200 per month, and the contract is expected to start between January and February 2025.

The project focuses on the evolution of aromatic derivatives of atmospheric interest but can be tailored slightly to match the skills and future research interests of the successful candidate. Mechanistic studies in the condensed or gas phase will be carried out using molecular spectroscopic techniques (IR, UV-Visible, gas-phase photoelectron spectroscopy) and cryogenic matrix isolation (MI, a specialty of our group). A secondary and additional research topic can also be pursued, involving the study of reactivity of aromatic derivatives in solution by using spectroelectrochemistry and mass spectrometry. This second topic is currently under development in our group. Candidates with previous experience, particularly in spectroelectrochemistry (or electrochemistry), and a willingness to learn how to work with cryogenic matrices are also welcome.

The postdoctoral researcher will primarily conduct cryogenic matrix isolation experiments on aromatic and polyaromatic (halogenated) derivatives to gain deeper insights into the vibrational and electronic spectroscopy of these compounds and their complexes with water and other atmospheric molecules. A key objective will be to study the (photo)reactivity with atmospheric oxidants, characterizing precursors, intermediate species, and products. The experimental work will be complemented by quantum chemistry calculations, particularly DFT and TD-DFT. Collaboration opportunities within our network may eventually allow the use of additional experimental techniques, such as molecular jets, laser action spectroscopy in cryogenic ionic traps, and Raman spectroscopy under MI conditions.

Skills: The candidate will hold a PhD in Physical Chemistry or a related field, with 0 to 4 years of postdoctoral experience. The candidate should have strong experience in molecular spectroscopy (FT-IR, UV-Vis, emission, …), knowledge of vacuum and cryogenic techniques, and familiarity with theoretical methods for studying reactivity and molecular properties (DFT, TD-DFT). Experience in spectroelectrochemistry or electrochemistry is also advantageous, especially for those interested in the secondary research topic. The candidate should be highly motivated, with a collaborative mindset, and eager to work on a combined experimental-theoretical project. The successful candidate will be expected to present their work at scientific conferences and take the lead in preparing peer-reviewed publications. Therefore, excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.
