PhD Student Positions in Liquid-Phase Electron Microscopy and Spectroscopy
The Ultrafast Electron Imaging Lab (UeIL) at the University of Waterloo, invites applications for PhD student positions in a cutting-edge research program focused on advanced imaging techniques in liquid-phase electron microscopy/spectroscopy. This prestigious program offers numerous opportunities for travel abroad and within Canada.
Program Overview
Duration: 4 years
Start Date: Spring 2025 or sooner depending on admission requirements Application Deadline: Open Until Filled
Location: University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada
Research Focus
The selected candidates will work on the development and application of liquid-phase and cryo-electron microscopy, advanced electron microscopy techniques utilized for characterizing a diverse selection of materials ranging from bio-specimens to nanomaterials.
Key Responsibilities
• Design and Fabrication: Develop instrumentation and substrates for use in high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopes.
• Software Development: Utilize Python scripting packages such as Numpy, Matplotlib, Hyperspy, and Scipy to develop tools for data acquisition and analysis.
• Experimental Analysis: Conduct measurements utilizing proprietary holders and nanofluidic cells in world-class electron microscopes. • Collaboration: Work closely with an interdisciplinary team of researchers from UeIL, NRC, HHTC, and international partners.
Benefits
• Travel Opportunities: Participate in international conferences, workshops, and collaborative research visits within Canada and abroad.
• Career Development: Gain access to state-of-the-art facilities and resources, with opportunities to contribute to high-profile research publications and patents.
Eligibility Criteria
• Academic Background: A master’s degree in biochemistry, chemistry, physics, materials science, materials and electric engineering, or a related field. Exceptional domestic students with a BSc degree are also offered the opportunity for direct entry into the PhD program.
• Skills: Demonstrated outstanding performance in undergraduate studies is a must, with a strong background in biochemistry, nanotechnology, electron microscopy, and programming. Knowledge and experience in the fields of molecular and structural biology is an asset. • Experience: Prior research experience in these techniques is not required, but a desire to learn advanced imaging techniques and experimental data analysis is essential. A commitment to hard work and ethical research practices is required.
• Language: Proficiency in English is required.
Application Process
Interested candidates should submit the following documents:
5. Cover Letter: A brief cover letter (half a page maximum) detailing your research interests and why you are suitable for this position.
6. Curriculum Vitae (CV): Including your academic background, research experience, and publications.
7. Academic Transcripts: Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended.
8. References: Contact information for three academic or professional referees, which will be required once you are selected and begin the formal application process.
