ERC-funded PhD position Time- and Energy-Resolved Electron Scattering, Max-Born-Institut, Berlin, Germany

TERES aims to push the frontiers of UED by developing time- and energy-resolved scattering techniques to measure coupled electronic-nuclear dynamics in molecules with femtosecond, eV and picometre resolutions. The project will offer novel insights into fundamental processes that govern important photochemical reactions. Initial work will focus on imaging the nuclear dynamics of gas-phase molecules with unprecedented resolution using an existing state-of-the-art UED set-up (https://pubs.aip.org/aca/sdy/article/11/5/054302/3312357/High-repetition-rate-ultrafast-electron), and later, we will upgrade our existing laser system and instrumentation to add the energy dimension to existing UED measurements, advancing the limits of ultrafast laser and electron beam physics. Collaborations with leading national and international researchers in both theory and experiments are an integral part of this project.

Requirements:

We are seeking highly motivated, talented, and excellent candidates for these positions. Applicants must hold a Master’s or Diploma degree in physics, with very good knowledge in ultrafast laser physics being essential. Prior experience in ultrafast electron diffraction, microscopy and/or working with high vacuum equipment is desirable. Excellent verbal and written communications skills in English are required.
